Eugene, Oregon, is the center of the U.S. athletics landscape — no, actually, it’s more than that. It’s the heartbeat of athletics in this country, a stadium that rises out of the trees like a palace, a spot where athletes young and old vie to say that they’ve won at one of the world’s spiritual homes of the sport.
Knowing its importance to the U.S. athletics landscape, World Athletics is bringing one of its marquee events to the Oregon destination. The World Athletics U20 Championships start August 5 and last for five days of competition with sessions at morning and night, showcasing athletes from 147 countries who could very well be on the marquee in two years’ time at the LA28 Olympic Games.
“For 100-plus years we’ve been invested in this sport, and I think it’s cool to look back on the legacy and history of track and field in this community dating back to the Bill Haywards and Bill Bowermans and all the names that have come over the years,” said J.B. Carney, Vice President, Destination Sales and Services for Travel Lane County. “When these athletes and fans come to town, they’re getting a truly unique experience which we’ve been able to provide.”
