As the days count down to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, the excitement is slowly building and momentum as well for Oklahoma City, the satellite site for LA28 that will be hosting softball and canoe kayak.
“It’s really just being able to partner with Los Angeles and put Oklahoma City on the international stage,” said Shaun Yates, Visit OKC Senior Vice President of Tourism Development. “I think people don’t quite have a grasp on the brand that is the Olympics and what that impact will be for the city. We’re expecting, conservative numbers, 300,000-400,000 people that will be here over 16 days.”
Between the two sports, Oklahoma City will have competition on 16 consecutive days. Being two hours ahead of Los Angeles, it will also allow for Visit OKC and the city to have a couple of live hours’ competition time for television windows in the morning before events start in L.A.
Geographically dispersed Games are well on their way to becoming the norm, USOPC Chief Executive Officer Sarah Hirshland said at the Columbia University Sports Management Conference.
